Chinese Proverb Wednesday

If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow.

This is extremely hard for most people.  Some people just enjoy the opportunity that anger gives them to blow up.  Some people , though, wish they could control themselves better so they can act differently in a moment of anger.  A moment of patience gives you your control back.

I have found the easier way to approach this is to practice having NO reaction to something.  This is actually an active practice, not a passive one like you may think.  If someone makes you angry, just look them in the eyes and practice NO reaction.  While you’re looking someone in the eye, put your mind’s attention on the breath going in and out of your lungs, so your mind has something to focus on internally rather than externally.

After about 3 full seconds, you’ll find your balance return.  Try it, and see if the few seconds it takes to do these two things gives you pause in a moment of anger.  You’ll then be in a better position to choose how you’d like to behave after the pause.  You’ll be giving yourself control.  The more control you have, the fewer mistakes (and regrets) you’ll make.
